چکیده

We have measured the H I power spectrum of the nearly face-on spiral galaxy NGC 628 (M74) using a visibility-based estimator. The power spectrum is well fitted by a power law P(U) = AU , with α = −1.6 ± 0.2 over the length-scale 800 pc to 8 kpc. The slope is found to be independent of the width of the velocity channel. This value of the slope is a little more than one in excess of what has been seen at considerably smaller length-scales in the Milky Way, the Small Magellanic Cloud, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the dwarf galaxy DDO 210. We interpret this difference as indicating a transition from three-dimensional turbulence at small scales to two-dimensional turbulence in the plane of the galaxy disc at length-scales larger than the H I scaleheight of the galaxy. The slope measured here is similar to that found at large scales in the LMC. Our analysis also places an upper limit to the galaxy scaleheight at 800 pc.

Application of the global modal approach to spiral galaxies

We have tested the applicability of the global modal approach in the density wave theory of spiral structure for a sample of six spiral galaxies: NGC 488, NGC 628, NGC 1566, NGC 2985, NGC 3938 and NGC 6503. The galaxies demonstrate a variety of spiral patterns from the regular open and tightly wound spiral patterns to a multi-armed spiral structure. Using the observed radial distributions of th...

Newton OBSERVATIONS OF THE SPIRAL GALAXY M 74 ( NGC

The face-on spiral galaxy M 74 (NGC 628) was observed by XMM-Newton on 2002 February 2. In total, 21 sources are found in the inner 5 from the nucleus (after rejection of a few sources associated to foreground stars). Hardness ratios suggest that about half of them belong to the galaxy. The higher-luminosity end of the luminosity function is fitted by a power-law of slope −0.8. This can be inte...

Evolution of structure in late-type spiral galaxies

Aims. We study two dimensional Fabry-Perot interferometric observations of the nearby face-on late-type spiral galaxy, NGC 628, in order to analyse the ionized gas component of the interstellar medium. Covering the galaxy out to a radius larger than 12 kpc, and with a spatial sampling of 1. ′′6, we aim to investigate the large-scale dynamics as well as feedback from individual H  regions into...

A Study of ISM of Dwarf Galaxies Using HI Power Spectrum Analysis

We estimate the power spectrum of HI intensity fluctuations for a sample of 8 galaxies (7 dwarf and one spiral). The power spectrum can be fitted to a power law PHI(U) = AU α for 6 of these galaxies, indicating turbulence is operational. The estimated best fit value for the slope ranges from ∼ −1.5 (AND IV, NGC 628, UGC 4459 and GR 8) to ∼ −2.6 (DDO 210 and NGC 3741). We interpret this bi-modal...
